FairMoney: Merchant Lending

FairMoney's merchant lending product was designed to simplify and digitize the loan application experience for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). The existing process relied heavily on manual operations, paper documentation, fragmented communication, and back-and-forth verification between merchants and loan officers. This created delays, confusion, and operational inefficiencies on both ends. The goal of this project was to bridge the manual loan application process for both loan officers and merchants by creating a seamless self-serve onboarding and lending experience that reduced operational friction while improving completion rates and visibility.
Many merchants found traditional loan application systems overwhelming, lengthy, and difficult to complete. Key issues included: · High drop-off during onboarding · Complex verification flows · Unclear progress visibility · Low trust during sensitive information submission · Friction between manual and automated processes · High loan defaulters rates · Poor guidance during KYB steps The business needed a solution that improved completion rates without compromising compliance standards.
To fully understand the operational bottlenecks, I shadowed loan officers for two weeks to observe how applications were processed internally. This helped uncover several critical insights: Key Findings · Most delays came from incomplete or incorrect documentation. · Merchants often did not understand why certain documents were required. · Loan officers spent significant time manually following up with applicants. · Application tracking was fragmented across spreadsheets and communication tools. · Merchants felt anxious due to lack of visibility into approval progress. · There was a high amount of loan defaulters which made all these efforts even more frustrating and unrewarding.
Based on the research findings, the experience was redesigned around three core principles: 1. Reduce cognitive load: Complex KYB processes were broken into smaller, digestible steps with guided instructions. 2. Increase transparency: Merchants needed visibility into where they were in the process and what remained. 3. Improve operational efficiency: Internal teams required centralized tools to manage applications at scale.
1: KYB Onboarding Wizard
The onboarding flow was designed into a guided step-by-step KYB experience. · Clear onboarding progress indicators. · Skip or resume-later functionality for complex document submission. · Simplified instructions for each verification stage. · Contextual explanations for required business documents. · Reduced overwhelming long-form application screens.

2: Guided Document Upload
A major pain point was document submission. The upload experience included: · Real-time upload validation. · File format guidance. · Error prevention messaging. · Upload status indicators. · Camera-assisted document capture support.

3: Trackable Dashboard
After document submission, merchants gained access to a centralised dashboard where they could: · Track application status in real time. · View and contact their loan officers. · See loan decisions, disbursement updates, and repayment schedules. · Repay loans on time.

An internal operational dashboard was also designed for loan officers. Features Included · Merchant profile overview. · Application queue management. · Status tracking across hundreds of applications. · Risk review and decision tools. · Internal approval workflows. This created a more scalable operational system for internal teams.
1: User Flow Mapping
I mapped the complete merchant journey from: Application → KYB Verification → Review → Approval → Disbursement → Repayment Tracking This helped identify moments of friction and unnecessary repetition.
2: Wireframing and Iteration
Low-fidelity wireframes were used in the first sprint to validate information hierarchy and onboarding flow structure before visual design. Multiple onboarding structures were tested to determine: · Optimal step grouping · Best progress visibility pattern · Ideal document upload sequencing
3: Prototype Testing
Interactive prototypes were tested with 4 internal SME owners. Key observations from testing: · Users preferred shorter grouped tasks over long application forms. · Progress visibility reduced onboarding anxiety. · Real-time validation improved confidence during uploads. · Users wanted the ability to pause and continue later. Insights from testing directly informed the final product decisions.
4: High Fidelity Designs
The final interface system focused on: · Minimal friction · Clear hierarchy · High readability · Trust-building visual patterns · Simplified task flows The visual direction balanced operational seriousness with accessibility for business owners who may not be financially sophisticated.

Research-led design: Grounded decisions in operational shadowing and usability testing insights.
Operational empathy drives stronger fintech products: Spending time with internal loan officers revealed workflow constraints that would not have surfaced through assumptions alone. Transparency reduces anxiety: Users are more willing to complete complex financial flows when they clearly understand progress and expectations. Simplicity improves trust: For sensitive financial products, reducing ambiguity and guiding users step-by-step significantly improves confidence and completion behavior.
